About Huntsburg, Ohio, in Geauga County
Huntsburg is a rural, zoned community. The town center is located at the intersection of State Routes 528 and 322 and is about 35 miles east of Cleveland in Geauga County. It is a 5-mile square and laid out in square miles. Huntsburg is home to a sizable Amish community that is part of the Middlefield settlement, the fourth largest in the world.
The township is governed by a 3-member board of trustees, elected in November of odd-numbered years to a 4- year term beginning the following January 1. An elected township fiscal officer serves a 4- year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election.
Huntsburg was named for Dr. Eben Hunt, one of the first owners who purchased this Western Reserve land from the Connecticut Land Company in 1803. Huntsburg Township was first settled in August 1808 by Stephen Pomeroy, coming from Northampton, Massachusetts and with his family, were the first pioneer settlers in Huntsburg. The first religious meeting was held in his log cabin and the first sermon was preached in 1809 by Rev. Joseph Badger. Ten years later the Church was formally organized with Rev. William Strong as Pastor. In 1831 the Congregationalists erected the building now occupied by the Huntsburg Congregational Church.
Huntsburg township has a U.S. post office, Town Hall, community center, 2 cemeteries, 2 township parks and the county Headwaters Park including more than 2 miles of the Ohio Buckeye Trail along the western shore of East Branch Reservoir with one of the trails paved for walking and riding bikes.
The township is home of Huntsburg Congregational Church and Huntsburg Baptist Church.
The annual Pumpkin Festival is held the first full weekend in October, having celebrated 50 years in 2019.
The Huntsburg Historical Society Museum is housed in the Community Center with tours by appointment.
The Huntsburg Grange meets monthly in the Town Hall, holding community service events during the year. The Town Hall is the only remaining Opera House in the county. A mural of an early look of Huntsburg on the south wall.
